TC11 (Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr) Heat-Resistant Titanium Alloy

TC11 is a Chinese α+β heat-resistant titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.25Si (broadly the Russian BT9 family). It offers high strength, excellent hot strength and creep resistance below 500 °C, good corrosion resistance to seawater and oxidising acids, and is the standard Chinese compressor-disc / blade alloy for aero-engines.

Overview

  • Material: TC11 — Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.25Si α+β heat-resistant titanium
  • Approx. equivalent: Russian BT9-type
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, forgings and custom profiles

Key Features

  • Good all-round mechanical properties: high strength and reasonable ductility;
  • Excellent hot strength and creep resistance below 500 °C;
  • Good corrosion resistance to seawater, moist chlorine gas and oxidising acids;
  • Good oxidation resistance within its service range;
  • High specific strength and good cryogenic toughness.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electron-beam melting for uniform composition and high purity.
  • Hot working: forged, rolled or extruded at 850–1050 °C with controlled heating.
  • Cold working: moderate cold ductility; intermediate annealing at approx. 650–750 °C.
  • Welding: TIG and electron-beam welding; weld strength reaches about 90 % of the base metal. Thorough cleaning and suitable shielding required.
  • Standard annealing: 700–800 °C for 1–2 h, air cool.
  • Double annealing: 950–1000 °C for 1–2 h air cool, then 550–600 °C for 4–6 h air cool.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 950–1000 °C then rapid cool; age at 500–550 °C to raise strength.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: aero-engine compressor discs, blades, drums and guide vanes; airframe structural parts;
  • Chemical: reactors, distillation columns, crystallisers and associated piping;
  • Metallurgy: crusher and toothed-roll components for longer service life;
  • Marine: desalination and aquaculture equipment and subsea piping.
