TC9 (Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-2.5Sn) Heat-Resistant Titanium Alloy

TC9 is a Chinese α+β heat-resistant titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-2.5Sn-0.3Si. It offers high strength, excellent hot strength and creep / fatigue resistance for long-term service at about 500 °C, and is used mainly for aero-engine compressor and turbine hot-section components.

Overview

  • Material: TC9 — Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-2.5Sn-0.3Si α+β heat-resistant titanium
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, forgings and custom profiles

Key Features

  • Good all-round mechanical properties: high strength and reasonable ductility;
  • Excellent hot strength for long-term service at 500 °C;
  • Good oxidation resistance within its service range;
  • Good corrosion resistance in most environments;
  • Outstanding elevated-temperature creep and fatigue resistance.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and low impurities.
  • Hot working: forged, rolled or extruded at 850–1050 °C with controlled heating.
  • Cold working: moderate cold ductility; intermediate annealing at approx. 650–750 °C.
  • Welding: TIG and electron-beam welding after thorough cleaning and with suitable shielding.
  • Standard annealing: 800–850 °C for 1–2 h, air cool.
  • Double annealing: 950–1000 °C for 1–2 h air cool, then 550–600 °C for 4–6 h air cool.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 950–1000 °C then rapid cool; age at 500–550 °C to raise strength.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: aero-engine blades, turbine discs and combustor hot-section parts; airframe structures and landing gear;
  • Shipbuilding: marine gas-turbine blades and turbocharger blades;
  • Petrochemical: high-temperature / high-pressure vessels, reactors and piping;
  • Medical: artificial joints and dental implants.
