TC3 (Ti-5.5Al-4V) Alpha-Beta Titanium Alloy

TC3 is a Chinese α+β titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-5.5Al-4V. It offers a good balance of high strength, ductility and weldability, retains properties to 400 °C and shows excellent cryogenic toughness below −196 °C, making it a workhorse for aerospace compressor parts, cryogenic vessels and marine structures.

Overview

  • Material: TC3 — Ti-5.5Al-4V α+β titanium alloy
  • Class: α+β titanium (lower-strength, more formable relative to TC4 / Ti-6Al-4V)
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube and forgings

Key Features

  • Excellent all-round properties: high strength and good ductility;
  • Good hot strength for long-term service at 400 °C;
  • Strong seawater corrosion resistance;
  • Good cryogenic toughness, retained below −196 °C;
  • Weldable, cold- and hot-formable, and strengthenable by quenching and ageing.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and low impurities.
  • Hot working: forged, rolled or extruded at 850–1000 °C with controlled heating.
  • Cold working: good cold ductility; cold rolled and cold drawn with intermediate annealing at approx. 650–700 °C.
  • Welding: TIG welding after thorough surface cleaning, with suitable parameters and shielding.
  • Stress-relief annealing: 550–650 °C for 1–3 h, air or furnace cool.
  • Full annealing: 750–850 °C for 1–2 h, air cool, for toughness and dimensional stability.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 900–950 °C then rapid cool; age at 500–550 °C to raise strength.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: compressor discs and blades, airframe structures and engine components; cryogenic / high-pressure vessels such as liquid-hydrogen fuel tanks for rockets and missiles;
  • Marine: submarine pressure hulls, propellers and seawater piping systems;
  • Chemical: reactors, piping and columns for high-temperature, high-pressure, highly corrosive service.
