TC2 (Ti-4Al-1.5Mn) Near-Alpha Titanium Alloy

TC2 is a Chinese near-α (Ti-Al-Mn) titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-4Al-1.5Mn. It offers medium strength, good plasticity and excellent weldability, and can serve long-term at 350 °C (short-term up to about 750 °C), used mainly for pressed and welded sheet-metal aerospace parts and corrosion-resistant tubing.

Overview

  • Material: TC2 — Ti-Al-Mn near-α titanium alloy
  • Nominal composition: Ti-4Al-1.5Mn
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube and forgings

Key Features

  • Medium strength with good plasticity;
  • Good process ductility and ease of forming;
  • Excellent weldability (TIG, spot and seam welding);
  • Good thermal stability — long-term service at 350 °C, short-term up to 750 °C;
  • Moderate corrosion resistance.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: two vacuum arc remelts (VAR); Mn added as an Al-Mn master alloy; first melt under vacuum, second under argon.
  • Hot working: forged, hot-rolled or hot-extruded at 850–950 °C with controlled heating.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn; intermediate annealing at 650–680 °C at high cold-reduction levels. For complex stampings, preheat the blank to 550–600 °C (resistance or torch heating) before forming.
  • Welding: TIG, spot and seam welding; control workpiece and weld-zone temperature to avoid overheating or rapid cooling; stress-relieve after welding.
  • Annealing: sheet / sheet parts 660–710 °C for 15–60 min, air cool or slower; bar / forgings / tube 740–790 °C for 1–2 h, air cool.
  • Stress-relief annealing: 545–585 °C for 0.5–6 h, air or furnace cool.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: pressed and welded sheet-metal parts such as the forward tail-cone skin and engine lower cowls;
  • Chemical industry: piping and vessels operating at moderate temperature in corrosive service.
