TC1 (Ti-2Al-1.5Mn) Near-Alpha Titanium Alloy

TC1 is a Chinese near-α (Ti-Al-Mn) titanium alloy. With strength slightly above commercially pure titanium but excellent workability and weldability, it is used for formed and welded sheet-metal structures, heat-shielding components and light-duty airframe parts operating below about 350 °C.

Overview

  • Material: TC1 — Ti-Al-Mn near-α titanium alloy
  • Nominal composition: Ti-2Al-1.5Mn
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet and forgings

Key Features

  • Good process ductility for complex shapes;
  • Excellent weldability for welded structures;
  • Good thermal stability for long-term service at 350 °C;
  • Slightly higher strength than CP titanium with some load capacity;
  • Good corrosion resistance in many environments.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: two vacuum arc remelts (VAR); Mn added as an Al-Mn master alloy; first melt under vacuum, second under argon.
  • Hot working: forged, hot-rolled or hot-extruded at 850–950 °C with controlled heating.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn with intermediate annealing.
  • Welding: good weldability, typically TIG welding with clean workpiece surface.
  • Annealing: sheet / sheet parts 580–750 °C for 0.5–2 h, air cool; bar / forgings 700–850 °C for 1–2 h, air cool.
  • Vacuum annealing: 600–700 °C for 0.5–2 h, furnace cool to below 200 °C then air cool (furnace pressure ≤ 9×10-5 Pa).
  • Stress-relief annealing: 520–560 °C for 0.5–2 h, air cool (air or vacuum furnace).

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: formed and welded sheet-metal parts (rear fuselage tail, skin, outer panels) and engine casings / heat shields;
  • Civil industry: automotive silencers, frames and suspension brackets.
