TB6 (Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al / Ti-10-2-3) Near-Beta Titanium Alloy

TB6 is a Chinese near-β titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al, identical to the well-known international alloy Ti-10-2-3 (Ti-1023). It offers high specific strength, excellent fracture toughness, good stress-corrosion resistance and low forging temperature, and is a standard structural titanium for aircraft landing gear and wing spars.

Overview

  • Material: TB6 — Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al near-β titanium alloy
  • International equivalent: Ti-10-2-3 / Ti-1023
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, forgings and custom profiles

Key Features

  • High specific strength — strength with reduced structural weight;
  • Good fracture toughness, resisting brittle failure under high stress;
  • Lower forging temperature, reducing processing cost and energy;
  • Good stress-corrosion cracking resistance in complex environments;
  • Tunable strength / ductility / toughness balance via heat treatment.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition.
  • Hot working: forged at 850–950 °C with controlled heating to avoid overheating / burning.
  • Cold working: limited cold ductility; preheat before cold forming.
  • Welding: reasonably good weldability by TIG and electron-beam welding with strictly controlled parameters.
  • Solution treatment: 760–815 °C (typically 800 ±10 °C) for 3–30 min, air cool or faster.
  • Ageing: 450–550 °C (typically 500 ±10 °C) for 8–24 h, air or furnace cool.
  • Stress-relief annealing: 650–700 °C for 30–60 min, air or furnace cool.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: aircraft landing gear, wing spars and engine components — used on Boeing 757 / 777, Airbus A320, B-1B, Mirage 2000 and Lynx helicopters;
  • Automotive: engine components and chassis suspension systems for lightweighting and fuel efficiency;
  • Sports: high-end bicycle frames and golf-club components.
