TA18 (Ti-3Al-2.5V / ASTM Grade 9) Titanium Alloy

TA18 is a Chinese near-α titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-3Al-2.5V, corresponding directly to international ASTM Grade 9 / UNS R56320. Its strength sits between commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V, while retaining good cold-formability, weldability, corrosion resistance and fatigue strength, which makes it especially popular for thin-wall tubing and lightweight structures.

Overview

  • Material: TA18 — Ti-3Al-2.5V near-α titanium alloy
  • International equivalent: ASTM Grade 9 / UNS R56320
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube, strip and forgings

Key Features

  • Relatively high strength retained at room and moderate elevated temperature;
  • Good corrosion resistance in seawater and many chemical media;
  • Good workability into a wide range of shapes and sizes;
  • Good wear resistance and fatigue strength;
  • Low density for lightweight design.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and purity.
  • Hot working: forged, hot-rolled or hot-extruded at 850–1050 °C; control heating rate and hold time to avoid overheating / burning.
  • Cold working: cold rolled, cold drawn and cold headed, with intermediate annealing at high cold-reduction levels.
  • Welding: TIG and electron-beam welding; thoroughly clean the workpiece and use suitable parameters / shielding.
  • Machining: milled, drilled and turned with appropriate tools, feeds / speeds and coolant.
  • Annealing: 650–750 °C for 1–3 h, air or furnace cool.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 800–900 °C then rapid cool; age at 500–650 °C to raise strength.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: structural parts, engine components and hydraulic / fuel-line tubing;
  • Marine engineering: seawater-treatment equipment, offshore-platform structures and seawater piping;
  • Chemical industry: reactors, piping and other corrosion-resistant equipment;
  • Medical: artificial joints and dental implants.
