TA15 (Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V) Near-Alpha Titanium Alloy

TA15 is a Chinese near-α high-temperature titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V. It combines high elevated-temperature strength, good weldability and good corrosion resistance, retaining properties up to about 500 °C, and is a workhorse structural alloy for Chinese and Russian aero-engines and airframes.

Overview

  • Material: TA15 — Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V near-α titanium alloy
  • Class: Near-α high-temperature titanium alloy
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube, forgings and custom profiles

Key Features

  • High elevated-temperature strength, retaining strength and stability below about 500 °C;
  • Good thermal stability — stable for 3000 h at 500 °C, short-term exposure to 800 °C, and service life up to 6000 h at a constant 450 °C;
  • Good weldability;
  • Good corrosion resistance against many media.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: typically three vacuum arc remelts (VAR) for uniform composition and purity.
  • Hot working: forged, rolled or extruded at 850–1050 °C; control heating rate and hold time to avoid overheating / burning.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn with intermediate annealing.
  • Welding: TIG and electron-beam welding; thoroughly clean the workpiece and use suitable parameters / shielding.
  • Annealing: 600–650 °C for 0.5–8 h, air or furnace cool.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 900–950 °C then rapid cool; age at 500–550 °C to raise strength.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: wing spars, fuselage frames, wing panels, engine fan discs and blades;
  • Petrochemical: high-temperature / high-pressure equipment, piping and reaction towers;
  • Energy: nuclear-reactor and gas-turbine components.
