TA13 (Ti-2.5Cu) Alpha Titanium Alloy

TA13 is a Chinese α-type titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-2.5Cu, corresponding to international IMI-269 / Ti-2.5Cu. It combines good ductility, excellent weldability and moderate high-temperature strength, and is one of the few titanium alloys that can be strengthened by solution treatment and ageing (Ti2Cu precipitation), making it used for aerospace hot-air ducts and engine casings.

Overview

  • Material: TA13 — Ti-2.5Cu α-type (age-hardenable) titanium alloy
  • International equivalent: IMI-269 / Ti-2.5Cu
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube and forgings

Key Features

  • Good process ductility and ease of forming;
  • Excellent weldability for complex structures (joint strength coefficient up to 100 %, with a slight reduction in tensile and bend ductility);
  • Good thermal stability over its service range;
  • Good balance of moderate strength and ductility;
  • Age-hardenable by solution treatment and ageing.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and purity.
  • Hot working: 800–950 °C with controlled atmosphere to avoid contamination.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn; intermediate annealing at high cold-reduction levels.
  • Welding: TIG, electron-beam and resistance welding; good weldability.
  • Annealing: 600–700 °C for 1–2 h, air cool.
  • Solution treatment & ageing: solution treat at 750–850 °C then rapid cool; age at 400–475 °C to raise strength (Ti2Cu precipitation).

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: aircraft structural parts; exhaust Mixer casings / ejector shrouds, rear-fuselage components, and stiffening bands, rings and support rings of exhaust collectors after afterburners;
  • Chemical industry: equipment and piping requiring corrosion resistance and thermal stability.
