TA10 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni / ASTM Grade 12) Titanium Alloy

TA10 is a Chinese near-α titanium alloy of nominal composition Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni, corresponding to international ASTM Grade 12 / UNS R53400. Molybdenum and nickel additions give markedly better corrosion resistance in reducing acids and high-temperature chloride environments — including resistance to crevice corrosion — while offering a cost-effective alternative to palladium-bearing Grade 7.

Overview

  • Material: TA10 — Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni near-α titanium alloy
  • International equivalent: ASTM Grade 12 / UNS R53400
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, tube, forgings and custom profiles

Key Features

  • Significantly better corrosion resistance than ordinary titanium in reducing acids and high-temperature chloride environments;
  • Improved resistance to crevice corrosion;
  • Good balance of strength and ductility;
  • Good workability into a range of shapes.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and consistent quality.
  • Hot working: forged, rolled or extruded at 800–950 °C; control heating rate and hold time to avoid overheating / burning.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn with intermediate annealing to restore ductility.
  • Welding: typically TIG welding; thoroughly clean the workpiece (oil, oxides) before welding and use suitable parameters / shielding to avoid defects.
  • Annealing: 650–750 °C for 1–3 h, air or furnace cool. (Grade 12 is normally supplied in the annealed condition; solution treatment and ageing have only a limited effect on this near-α alloy — verify the intended heat treatment.)

Typical Applications

  • Petrochemical: reaction towers, heat exchangers, piping and valves handling corrosive media;
  • Marine engineering: desalination equipment and corrosion-resistant offshore-platform components;
  • Shipbuilding: seawater piping systems and heat exchangers;
  • Nuclear: nuclear-waste-treatment service.
