TA6 (Ti-5Al) Alpha Titanium Alloy

TA6 is a Chinese α-type titanium alloy based on the Ti-Al binary system with about 5 % aluminium (Ti-5Al), corresponding approximately to the Russian VT5 / Ti-5Al α alloy. It combines moderate strength, good ductility in the annealed condition, good corrosion resistance and good weldability, and is used for aerospace high-temperature structural parts and pressure-resistant chemical equipment.

Overview

  • Material: TA6 — Ti-5Al α-type titanium alloy
  • Approx. equivalent: Russian VT5 / Ti-5Al
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, tube, forgings and custom profiles

Mechanical Properties

PropertyTypical Range
Tensile strength650–880 MPa
Yield strength350–550 MPa
Elongation8–25 %
Modulus of elasticityapprox. 200,000 MPa (this is a steel value; titanium is typically ~110,000 MPa — verify)

Key Features

  • Moderate strength and good ductility in the annealed condition;
  • Good corrosion resistance in a range of media;
  • Good heat resistance, retaining stability below about 400 °C;
  • Good weldability.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for uniform composition and impurity control.
  • Hot working: forged with a hold of about 1 h at around 1177 °C; working temperature not below 1010 °C; solution treatment after hot working.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn, with appropriate annealing after cold reduction.
  • Welding: common fusion and resistance welding methods can be used; oxy-acetylene welding is not recommended. (The source's recommendation of AWS E/ER 630 filler is a stainless-steel consumable and does not apply to titanium — verify filler-metal selection.)
  • Note: as an α-type alloy, TA6 is not normally strengthenable by solution treatment and ageing; annealing is the standard treatment. Verify the heat-treatment schedule against the mill certificate.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: high-temperature aircraft structural parts such as engine compressor blades and discs; missile nose-cone shells and structural parts; welded components of conventional weapon systems;
  • Chemical industry: reaction equipment and piping subject to pressure and corrosive environments.
