TA1 (ASTM Grade 1) Commercially Pure Titanium

TA1 is a Chinese grade of commercially pure (CP) α-titanium, corresponding to international ASTM Grade 1 / UNS R50240. It is the softest and most ductile of the CP titanium grades, combining very low density, excellent corrosion resistance, good weldability and full biocompatibility, and is widely used in chemical equipment, marine service and medical implants.

Overview

  • Material: TA1 — commercially pure titanium (Grade 1)
  • International equivalent: ASTM Gr.1 / UNS R50240 / DIN 3.7025
  • Class: α-type pure titanium
  • Available forms: Bar, plate, sheet, strip, tube, wire and forgings

Key Features

  • Low density with moderate strength and excellent ductility / formability;
  • Outstanding corrosion resistance, especially in chloride and acidic environments;
  • Excellent biocompatibility;
  • Stable thermal-expansion behaviour in varying temperatures.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

  • Melting: Vacuum melting, at least one vacuum arc remelting (VAR), to ensure purity and consistency.
  • Hot working: forged, extruded, rolled or drawn at 800–900 °C in a neutral or slightly oxidising atmosphere.
  • Cold working: cold rolled and cold drawn; intermediate annealing is required once the cold-reduction threshold is reached to remove work hardening.
  • Welding: typically TIG (argon-arc) welding; also plasma, resistance and gas-shielded diffusion welding.
  • Annealing: 670–720 °C for 0.5–2 h.
  • Stress-relief annealing: 530–550 °C for 0.5–1 h, or 470–490 °C for 2–4 h.

Typical Applications

  • Chemical industry: equipment, piping and tanks handling highly corrosive media;
  • Aerospace: aircraft structures and engine components;
  • Medical: implants and bone screws (biocompatible grade);
  • Marine engineering: vessels and offshore oil-drilling platform equipment.
