Monel K500 (UNS N05500)

Monel K500 (also specified as UNS N05500) is a precipitation-hardening nickel-copper alloy. It combines the excellent corrosion resistance of the Monel family — particularly in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and alkaline media — with greatly increased strength, hardness, wear resistance and fatigue performance after age hardening. It is the preferred Monel grade where higher mechanical strength is required in marine and chemical service.

Overview

  • Category: Precipitation-hardening (PH) nickel-copper alloy (Ni-Cu-Al-Ti)
  • Standards: UNS N05500, ASTM B865, AMS 4676
  • Available forms: Round bar / rod, plate, sheet, pipe & tube, forgings, wire, and custom profiles to order

Good hardness, wear resistance and excellent fatigue performance in the aged condition.

Fabrication & Welding

  • Hot working: 1040–1200 °C with moderate heating speed; air cool after working.
  • Cold working: Good cold-formability (cold rolling, cold drawing, stamping), but with a relatively high work-hardening rate.
  • Welding: Readily welded by GTAW (TIG) and resistance welding. Control heat input carefully during welding and apply suitable post-weld heat treatment.

Heat Treatment

  • Solution treatment: Heat to 1010–1065 °C and cool rapidly.
  • Ageing: Heat to 538–649 °C, hold for a specified period, then air cool, to precipitate the strengthening phase and develop high strength and hardness.

Key Features

  • Outstanding corrosion resistance in seawater, salt solutions, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide;
  • Very high strength after age hardening, meeting demanding high-strength applications;
  • Good wear resistance for friction / abrasion service;
  • Excellent fatigue resistance under cyclic loading;
  • Good fabricability into a wide range of components.

Corrosion Resistance

  • Long-term stability in marine environments and chemical industry service;
  • Good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion;
  • Resists seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and alkaline media such as sodium hydroxide.

Typical Applications

  • Marine engineering: ship propellers, pump shafts and desalination equipment components;
  • Petrochemical: reactors, piping and valves;
  • Aerospace: engine components and fasteners;
  • Instruments: corrosion-resistant instrument parts and sensor components.
